Co-op Party Sec-Gen comments on 'Big Society'
Michael Stephenson, Secretary General of the Co-operative Party, passes judgement on 'Big Society' this week writing it off as a con. He says
If volunteers don’t have the resources, time or expertise to run
those services like museums and libraries they will simply fail
or be privatised. This is Thatcherism under the guise of a
community ethic.
It is very interesting that despite their initial undertakings to the contrary the Government have backtracked on their commitments to a co-operative approach - not just on Big Society - also in terms of such issues as the future of Northern Rock. Yet one would think that if they were serious about 'Big Society' the co-operative approach would be entirely consistent with that objective.
