A new campaign called Join In is calling on Britons to help build an Olympic legacy by getting involved in sport.
It's been supported with £2.5m of government fundand and will launch its first project - Join In Local Sport - this weekend just a week after the huge success of Team GB at the Olympic Games.
The campaign has kicked off with a big promotional drive including an an email campaign that will be sent to millions of people urging them to visit the Join In website to view listings of local sports events, clubs and volunteering opportunities which are searchable by postcode, along with easy to use forms that enable anyone to add a listing of their own - so far there are over 5,000 events listed on the site.
The campaign has the backing of sports personalities Daley Thompson and Sharon Davies along with current Olympians who will be getting involved through their nearest club.
In a speech to thank the armed forces, police and volunteers that worked on the Games the Prime Minister said on Wedensday:
“We need to make the most of this magic moment and harness the enthusiasm for sport and for volunteering the Games has generated. That’s why the ‘Join In Local Sport’ project is so important, so that we bring London 2012 back to the place it begins for every great champion: their local sports club and the great volunteers who make it all possible.”
