On the 8th June we were delighted to find out that we had come second in the ivo social competition. We're so grateful to everyone who voted for our blog and we hope to see you at the event on 8th July.
Planning and preparation for V in the Park has completely taken over the Volunteer Centre office over the last couple of weeks. We've have a crew of 7 different voluntary organisations running activities at the event, including Harrogate Advocacy, Ripon Museums Trust, Avalon Freedom, Henshaws, Leonard Cheshire Disability, Social Media Surgery and Age UK.
One of the most surprising things about the event is the activities which different organisations have chosen to run to illustrate how they involve volunteers. A number of the organisations taking part could be thought of as 'caring' organisations yet this isn't neccessarily reflected in their volunteer roles. Age UK, for example, proposed circle dancing for their activity. This will be run by one of Age UK's volunteers who leads a group of around 15 older people in a seated circle dance to music. The group use a variety of props such as scarves and it's a chance to meet new people, keep active and have fun. 9 of the regular circle dancers will be attending V in the Park to put on a full scale demonstration with a sound system! There will be extra seats and everyone is welcome to join in and have a go.
Another of the organisations who have chosen to perform at V in the Park is Henshaws Society for the Blind. Henshaws run an Arts and Crafts Centre for the visually impaired, they also have a house band called The Hotspots who will doing two busking sessions at the event. The Hotspots are regular performers in and around Knaresborough and have recently released their own EP - they are supported and led by a volunteer band leader. Come along to enjoy the music and find out how you could use your creative skills to make a huge difference to someone's life.
The Hotspots take to the stage for 2 half hour slots at 1.00pm and 2.30pm.
V in the Park takes place this Sunday, 8th July from 12.00 to 4.00pm in the Sun Pavilion, Valley Gardens, Harrogate. Entry to the event is completely free.
