Hear Us is Croydon's Mental Health User led group.
Hear Us acts as a 'voice for service users - people in the Borough of Croydon who experience mental health problems' - actively campaigning for better services, educating the public and challenging the stigma that surrounds mental illness. We work to help people affected to feel more empowered and gain the confidence to become more actively involved in their community. Hear Us is run entirely by people who have themselves experienced or are experiencing mental health problems, all our staff, volunteers and most of our Trustees are people living with mental health problems.
On July 3rd 2012 we are putting on a Wellbeing Event for people in Croydon who are affected by Mental illness, their families, carers and staff. As an organisation, it has been highlighted to us more and more that people are looking for alternative ways to manage their mental wellbeing, including anxiety, depression and psychosis. To compliment traditional 'talking therapies' and medication, people are becoming increasingly aware of the positive benefits of a more holistic approach to wellbeing.
We will be hosting an afternoon of 'Taster Sessions' including Tai Chi, Shiatsu, Mindfullness, Relaxation, and Chanting. We are also hoping to have a seperate space where people can enjoy the benefits of Massage, Reflexology and Zen Acupuncture. We are inviting along guest speakers to hold discussion groups on Spirituality and finally, we are inviting other mental health groups along to run creative writing and art sessions, as well as Mind in Croydon who will be running their very popular 'Cook and Taste'. Croydon Stop smoking and Croydon diabetes will be among the stall holders at the event.
We are asking all 'therapists, speakers and stall holders to give their time for FREE to this event, but are looking for funding for hiring of the venue, art materials, refreshments, travel expenses and advertising (posters and flyers) so that we can reach as many people in Croydon affected by mental illness as possible. Our last Wellbeing Event attracted over 300 participants across the Borough and the feedback was excellent.
The event will be organised entirely by people with lived experience of mental health problems, and will be an excellent opportunity to bring together people with and without mental illness, reducing the stigma and isolation often experienced by people affected by mental illness.
Our organisation, Hear Us, hopes that these 'taster sessions' will increase awareness and also open up opportunities for people to look at a whole range of ways to improve their mental wellbeing and overall quality of life. Hear Us would be delighted to win this competition and thereby provide an afternoon of social inclusion, wellbeing and FUN to as many people in the borough of Croydon as possible.
