Barnsley Sea Cadets

Barnsley Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets
TS Diomede, Barnsley Sea Cadets has been in Barnsley for almost 70 years and has had a Marine Cadet Detachment, now Royal Marines Cadets for the last 10. Over the years many young people have gone through the unit, but one thing remains constant the need for good volunteers.
We need volunteers with a range of skills from those who want to help train cadets, to those who can apply their business skills to help run the Management Teams that support each Unit. Volunteering is rewarding and we welcome volunteers who have plenty of practical life experience and, on the management side, some basic business skills who can use these to benefit a great cause.

All volunteer instructors serve a probationary period of six months after which you can decide whether to become a uniformed or non - uniformed instructor.

As a Sea Cadet volunteer you will;
—Support young people
—Encourage them to take part in challenging and aspirational activities
—Get a sense of personal achievement from involvement with a local youth charity
—Invest in the local community as part of a widely respected charity
—Experience adventure and learn new skills
—Gain valuable and externally recognised qualifications
—Give your time and commitment consistent with other demands on your life
—Meet new people and make new friends

Here is a brief insight into some of the roles available;

Uniformed Instructor
Teach cadets a wide variety of skills and qualifications. Following a probationary period and induction, you will also take part in a training programme that enables you to guide cadets through our core syllabus. If you have previous experience in the Armed Forces, Merchant Navy or another uniformed youth organisation we will recognise that experience. Many uniformed instructors are former cadets, passing on the skills they learned when they were cadets.

Our uniformed rank structure is aligned to the Royal Navy. There is the chance to rise to the rank of Warrant Officer or be selected as an Officer and some may rise to the rank of Commander. Those joining the Royal Marine Cadets follow a rank structure aligned to the Royal Marines.

Non Uniformed Instructor
Volunteers with a wide range of skills from power boating or sailing to First Aid join Sea Cadets. We ask volunteers to undertake some training (Induction, First Aid, Safeguarding) to ensure that cadets will be in safe hands. Further training is available based upon your skills and preferences.

Unit Assistant
Carry out a variety of tasks to help their local unit, for example: mini-bus driver, painter and decorator.

Unit Management Team (UMT)
Each Sea Cadet Unit is an independent charity and members of the UMC are the trustees of the Unit charity.

All volunteers, irrespective of their role undergo a criminal records disclosure check (CRB) when they join the charity.

As you would expect we would welcome applications from former members of the armed forces who often have additional skills to offer. But previous experience is not a pre-requisite more important is the wish and commitment to help young.

We have planned an informal Adult Recruitment evening for Monday 6th September at 1930hrs (7.30), when the Commanding Officer will be available to give you an insight in to the cadets and what we are all about.
