Teaching English to local Bedouin guides in a Jordan Nature Reserve
This is a unique project, spending two weeks in Jordan supporting our Expert Partner in their initiative of supporting the local community.
What Would I Be Doing?
Volunteers will build the English skills of local Bedouin guides. Volunteers who have experience of teaching English would be delivering workshops and creating training resources for local people to continue to deliver English training to the guides throughout the year. Volunteers without experience of teaching English would be involved in more conversational groups and offering the guides the chance to practice in a structured way.
Where?
Dana nature reserve managed by Wild Jordan.
When/How Long?
Spring 2010 (dates TBC) / 1-2 weeks
What Experience Do I Need?
This is an open project, anyone can register to take part. However,it would be great to have some people with any of the following skills: Presentation/group work; English Teaching; TEFL teaching; General teaching. Enthusiasm and commitment are the most important skills!
Why Is This Project Needed?
The project will enable local guides to sell their services to local markets and share their innate knowledge of the landscape with visitors to the region. In strengthening their language skills, the guides will be able to create a sustainable income for themselves, increasing the likelihood that they can preserve their unique Bedouin way of life and continue to live and work in the reserve.
What Are The Costs Involved?
Volunteers are asked to fund-raise a set amount of money (Usually around £1200 though this is based on individual factors) that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation.
Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.
The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a micro - finance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community.
How Am I Supported?
Volunteers will be supported by a named member of The Great Generation staff and our expert partner, before, during and after your project.
Great! How Do I Find Out More?
If you are interested in taking part in this project you will need to fill in a volunteer registration form and provide two references. To confirm an initial offer of a place on the project you will need to transfer a £120 non-refundable donation.
