In May 2009, following the recommendations of the 2008 Commission on the Future of Volunteering, the Office of the Third Sector (OTS) announced a new two-year, £3 million programme providing support to people who manage volunteers.

Capacitybuilders is managing the Volunteer Management Programme, according to the following three Strands:

• Strand A: A 2 year grant fund for local volunteer infrastructure organisations to provide local outreach to volunteer managers.

• Strand B: Two years national strategic support of volunteer management led by Volunteering England.

• Strand C – up to £1 million bursary fund to pay for training for people who manage volunteers.

Volunteering England will be focusing on the delivery of two key pieces of work as part of Strand B of the Volunteer Management Programme.

The first piece of work involves developing and implementing a campaign to increase awareness of volunteer management, working with key decision makers in volunteer involving organisations, as well as with people who manage volunteers, equipping them with influencing skills and tools. The campaign also seeks to embed volunteer management in the wider skills agenda.

The second piece of work involves creating a “Volunteer Management Portal” which will sign-post to information, support, training and development opportunities for people who manage volunteers.
